Scott Allison, Breeder and Trainer Scott is a 1994 graduate of the prestigious Ranch Management Program of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. This program is unique in the ranching world, giving its graduates a thorough understanding of the principles and interrelationships of soil, water, plants, animals, people, markets, and finance combined with a broad knowledge of alternative methods and practices and enough working experience to apply them anywhere. Since graduation, Scott has been with Hansen Livestock, a family-owned cow/calf, yearling, and sheep operation located in the scenic Beaverhead Valley of Montana and surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. The ranch supports 1200 cow/calf pairs and several hundred yearlings each year. In most cases, cattle work on the ranch is handled by Scott and a few of his cowdogs. After learning firsthand what an asset trained dogs could be in a ranching operation, Scott began looking for the perfect stockdog to breed, raise, and train, not only for his own use, but also for other ranchers who were learning that a few good cowdogs were irreplaceable help in handling cattle in a variety of situations. "When the Hangin' Tree stockdog line was founded, one criteria for the selection of puppies that would go on to be eligible as foundation stock for the line was that the puppies had to show they had the natural ability to work by the time they were 3 months old. Under normal conditions, you would never attempt to work a dog that young. But in a controlled situation with dog-broke stock, puppies that had what it took to produce stockdogs with a natural ability for working cattle could demonstrate their inborn herding ability and instinct even at that early age. "My Hangin' Tree cowdogs are strong hunters; they have some bark, which they instinctively seem to know when to use and when not to use. Their workdays may include handling cattle in our feedlots, pastures, and/or on Forest Service allotments. On any given day they may hunt or sort yearlings, drive pairs, move cattle from one pasture to the other, or perform any other job involving cattle on a ranch. "Each year our ranch supports 1200 cow/calf pairs and several hundred yearlings. Our cattle are a Hereford/Angus cross, producing Black and Black Baldy calves each year. The cows are moved every few weeks and are dog-broke, making them easier to handle. We hold our steer calves over until they mature into yearlings before moving them up into the forest allotments. During that holding time, we handle those calves as much as possible with the dogs so that before moving them up into the summer ranges, they are fairly well dog-broke.
