Scott Allison, Breeder and Trainer
Scott is a 1994 graduate of the prestigious Ranch Management Program of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. This program is unique in the ranching world, giving its graduates a thorough understanding of the principles and interrelationships of soil, water, plants, animals, people, markets, and finance combined with a broad knowledge of alternative methods and practices and enough working experience to apply them anywhere. Since graduation, Scott has been with Hansen Livestock, a family-owned cow/calf, yearling, and sheep operation located in the scenic Beaverhead Valley of Montana and surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. The ranch supports 1200 cow/calf pairs and several hundred yearlings each year. In most cases, cattle work on the ranch is handled by Scott and a few of his cowdogs. After learning firsthand what an asset trained dogs could be in a ranching operation, Scott began looking for the perfect stockdog to breed, raise, and train, not only for his own use, but also for other ranchers who were learning that a few good cowdogs were irreplaceable help in handling cattle in a variety of situations. Scott’s search for the perfect stockdog led him to the Hangin’ Tree Cowdog line, dogs bred specifically to handle cattle in a variety of situations. Scott now breeds and sells Hangin’ Tree Cowdogs, working dogs for working cowboys.

"When the Hangin' Tree stockdog line was founded, one criteria for the selection of puppies that would go on to be eligible as foundation stock for the line was that the puppies had to show they had the natural ability to work by the time they were 3 months old. Under normal conditions, you would never attempt to work a dog that young. But in a controlled situation with dog-broke stock, puppies that had what it took to produce stockdogs with a natural ability for working cattle could demonstrate their inborn herding ability and instinct even at that early age.
"My Hangin' Tree cowdogs are strong hunters; they have some bark, which they instinctively seem to know when to use and when not to use. Their workdays may include handling cattle in our feedlots, pastures, and/or on Forest Service allotments. On any given day they may hunt or sort yearlings, drive pairs, move cattle from one pasture to the other, or perform any other job involving cattle on a ranch. No two days are alike, and my Hangin' Tree dogs are ready for any job that I can give them.
"I believe Hangin' Tree dogs truly stand out among other cattle-working breeds. They instinctively know how to gather a herd, round up any strays, and keep the stock calm and manageable. With their efficiency of movement and superior inborn herding ability, they are naturals in handling stock. They truly are working dogs for working cowboys."

Scott, moving cattle with his dogs on the Hansen Livestock Ranch, located in southwestern Montana in the beautiful Beaverhead Valley, south of Dillon.
"Moving cattle like this is just one of the things that a Hangin' Tree stockdog from Allison's Stockdogs is trained to do. With a couple of well-trained dogs, one cowboy can easily move cattle from one point to another with minimum effort.
"I use, breed, train, and sell Hangin' Tree cowdogs because I believe they are the ideal working dog for working cowboys. My dogs will work for you in whatever situation you have with your cattle. When you buy a Hangin' Tree stockdog from Allison's Stockdogs, you not only gain a valuable member of your working crew, but also will get a personal demonstration and handling tips from me when you purchase your dog or dogs.
"The ranch terrain includes not only the open range areas of the Beaverhead Valley, but also some of the roughest country in southwest Montana. Our summer range, for example, covers areas of rocks, boulders, timber, deep gullies, steep-walled canyons, narrow ridges, and, of course, mountain tops. My Hangin' Tree dogs are invaluable when it comes to moving or finding cattle in such varied terrain. The dogs can go places a man on a horse cannot, and they are tireless workers."

"Each year our ranch supports 1200 cow/calf pairs and several hundred yearlings. Our cattle are a Hereford/Angus cross, producing Black and Black Baldy calves each year. The cows are moved every few weeks and are dog-broke, making them easier to handle. We hold our steer calves over until they mature into yearlings before moving them up into the forest allotments. During that holding time, we handle those calves as much as possible with the dogs so that before moving them up into the summer ranges, they are fairly well dog-broke.
"Even when working long days under stressful conditions, Hangin' Tree cowdogs never give you less than 100%. They are a hardy and tough breed, love what they do, and are eager to please. They know what needs to be done, and are ready to go when you need them. Frequently they will surprise you by seemingly anticipating what the herd is going to do. This inborn instinct for superior cattle work is another reason that I believe Hangin' Tree cowdogs are the very best cowdog that a cowboy can have.
"A cowboy who owns one of my Hangin' Tree dogs will have a constant and faithful companion who will serve him well in all aspects of ranch work. Only by seeing a well-trained cowdog perform in the field, under a variety of conditions, can a true appreciation of the breed be realized. The teamwork between a cowboy and a Hangin' Tree cowdog is a beautiful thing to see."
